What We Do
This year M. Lambe Construction is celebrating its 25th anniversary
in the
construction industry.
We are a civil engineering contractor working in the following sectors
on
projects up to £10m in value;
• Commercial
• Education
• Leisure
• Infrastructure
•
Private & social housing
• local authority
We have our own specialist surfacing division complete with asphalt
paver
having the capacity to lay up to 400t per day.
Our People
M. Lambe Construction
is committed to providing our clients with the highest
level of service. To this end we endeavour to provide a list of all possible
contacts needed to ensure that pressing matters are dealt with as quickly
as
possible.
To ensure that we meet customer expectations we have recruited a skilful and dedicated workforce both on and off site.
We currently employ the services of in excess of 300 operatives on site. Below
is an example of some of the ongoing training we arrange to ensure a fully
competent workforce.
- Manual Handling
- Risk Assessment
- Asbestos Awareness
- HAVS Awareness
- Abrasive Wheels
- Face Fit Testing
- Fire Safety
- First Aid
- Confined Spaces
Entry
- New Roads and Streetworks Qualification Register
- Construction Plant Competence Scheme
- Construction Skills Certification Scheme
- Various NHBC, IOSH & NEBOSH
courses
We also encourage and support
site operatives to work towards NVQ level 2, 3 & 4, with a large
number of our operatives already having achieved this status.
This training is supported by our groundbreaking online Health & Safety
database which allows our clients to view a current list of all M.Lambe operatives
working on their site and all of their certificates/cards.
Training is of course not a substitute for skilled workmanship – many of our
operators have been with the company for more than a decade and are highly
skilled. We also have a very low staff turn over. This therefore retains and
builds on the ongoing global knowlage within the company of
how we operate and what our clients expect from us. In order to sustain these
skills
in the
long term we also continuously recruit apprentices
putting
on
average
3
- 5
througn
the
National
Construction
College Groundworks course each year..
Our Headquarters
Off site, we have recently
moved into a purpose built office block which is the product of an
in house design & build project.
The property includes an extensive
storage yard so most of the commonly used materials are generally available
to our sites at very short notice.
The office houses dedicated teams operating in:
- Business Management
- Quantity Surveying
- Contracts Management
- Health & Safety
- Finance
- Purchasing
- Administration
Our staff hierarchy operates on a very flat level which provides all employees with the opportunity to provide feedback to any area of the company at any management level. It is by no means unusual to see Managing Director Mick Lambe attending each live site 2-3 times per week.

Our Equipment
Our personnel
resources are supported by a large in house fleet of vehicles and machinery.
The fleet is continually being renewed and currently consists of:
- 55+
Excavators ranging from 0.8T – 48T
- 45+
Dumpers ranging from 1T – 25T
- 22+ Rollers
- 2 Telehandlers
- 3 2CX's
- 1 Bitelli Paver
- 1 Liebherr 632
- A large selection of small plant including mechanical and pneumatic kerb lifting equipment
As part of our safe equipment
purchasing policy all 360 excavators up to 21T are zero tail swing,
making them much safer and therefore a lower liability on site. We
also work to the spillards all round vision 1m rule for plant operators
visability withthe newer excavators being fitted with rear view cameras.
The fleet is maintained by 2 in house mechanics and is annually tested
by an
external
HSE registered
inspector.
As with our operatives, Site Managers can view a list of machinery on site over the internet where Machinery Safety Certificates can also be viewed.
Preferred Supplier Agreements
At the beginning of 2008
the company signed 12 month preferred supplier agreements
with 3 suppliers of concrete, asphalt and aggregates. These agreements
are now being reviewed for 2009.
These agreements have enabled us to establish unrivalled working relationships
with our suppliers and to determine agreed levels of service which guarantee
delivery times and daily capacity.
Since the agreements have been in operation we have already seen marked
improvements in our productivity. Together with the introduction of the
latest
programming software it recently enabled us to complete a complex multimillion
pound infrastructure project for David Wilson Homes on time and within
budget.
Value Engineering
Another benefit to structuring
our procurement in the form of preferred
supplier agreements is that we now have unfettered access to the
technical
department of each of our preferred suppliers. In practical terms
this has resulted
in a presence at both tender and pre-start meetings. This coupled with
the experiance we have gained in various areas over the years of alternative
construction methods has led to our ability to
offer cost/time
effective
and
environmentally
friendly
alternatives to our clients.
